Helen VanValkenburg needs no introduction to all of us at Newtown Library-- she has been a fixture here since 1975. She came to our library after answering an ad in the newspaper asking for volunteers. When she came in for an interview, they asked her to work at the front circulation desk, but she told them she was more interested in office work. Helen began her working career at Wanamaker's, where she volunteered in the employee library (yes, they had one!) in her free time. During World War II, she managed offices for the Army and Navy in Philadelphia. In 1962, she became the office manager for Upper Darby Primos Library, where she worked for 13 years before moving out to Newtown Square.
Helen says she has done just about every job in the library-- except order books. A few years ago she and her husband of over 57 years, Jim, moved into Whitehorse Retirement Village, and they enjoy the library there as well. We are very lucky to have had such a loyal, dependable volunteer in our office. Helen and Jim have two daughters and four grandchildren. Helen's love of books continues to this day-- she is constantly finding new authors to read.
Our valued longtime volunteer retired from the library. We celebrated with a party to honor her 35 years of service to Newtown Public Library on 10/16/10. Thanks Helen! We miss you.
